Welcome to Coyne Artworks

Here you will find my love of detail & color. I layer my artwork, adding in bits of other colors that you see in real life. I was struck by the photorealists as well as the impressionists in college. I prefer a realistic, painterly style using colored pencils. While my subjects are largely four-legged, I also draw humans.

Oil painting is a more recent addition to my portfolio.

About the artist

My home is in Carmel, IN. I grew up in St. Louis MO, graduating with a BFA in Visual Communication – Illustration from the University of Kansas, studying under the likes of Roger Shimomura, a well known pop artist from Seattle, WA. Roger was an inspiration to me because here was this famous artist, telling me I had the ability to draw anything. That really shaped my art from there on out.

Colored Pencil Work

Portraits of people, pets - done in ebony pencil or layered colored pencil on illustration board, mat board, or watercolor paper. I create a lot of memorial portraits. I love being able to provide a nice piece of art to honor a beloved family member. I use Prismacolor pencils for the full color pieces. What you can't see in a photo of the drawing is the rich, velvety look that is achieved by layering colors with these soft pencils.

Oil Paintings

I am loving painting with oils. It's somewhat of a new medium for me and I am working on more, so this section will be growing in the near future. I layer these as I do my colored pencil work, and I love the depth I can create. These pieces take a lot longer, but the end result is really rich, in my opinion.

Acrylic Paintings

I've painted with acrylics more than oil since my college days, thinking I liked them better, but my opinion has changed. Although I can get good detail with a dry brush technique, I prefer other mediums more now as my art evolves. For me, acrylic is great for inexpensive, quick pieces.
